Playing simple character 'challenging' for Salman

$

0

Superstar Salman Khan, who has essayed action-packed roles in films like "Kick", "Dabangg" and "Wanted", says he found it hard to break his macho image in "Bajrangi Bhaijaan".

"It was a difficult thing for me right now to play after the 'Dabangg', 'Wanted' and other films. It was challenging to come back to play a simple character," Salman said here.

The 49-year-old actor, however, said that "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" does have action to some extent.

"There is action and everything (in 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan') but it is simple and all heart. We've shown a typical Hindustani (Indian) character where people get a feeling, 'What a nice guy', 'bechara' (innocent)."

"All the action films we do, they need to be backed with emotions. Otherwise, action is pointless," he added.

Released on July 17, "Bajrangi Bhaijaan", which is co-produced by Salman Khan Films (SKF) with Rockline Venkatesh, is about the bond shared by a Pakistani mute girl, essayed by young and beautiful child artist Harshaali Malhotra, and an Indian man.

The film has entered the Rs.100 crore club in its opening weekend itself.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday announced tax free status for Salman Khan-starrer "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" in the state.

The film, which is smashing records at the box office, was made tax free after director Kabir Khan met the chief minister with the request, said an official spokesman.

During the meeting, Akhilesh Yadav told Khan that the state offers immense possibilities for film production owing to which the state government has unveiled an attractive and convenient film policy, which has attracted many film makers into shooting in the state.

In the last three months, many films have been shot in the state and many more proposals for shooting at different locales in the state are in the pipeline, he said, assuring all support and cooperation to the film makers who desire to use the state for film shoots.

Akhilesh Yadav also said that work on developing two film cities in the state was underway. While one will come up on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, the other will come up at Trans-Ganga Hitech City Scheme in Unnao, neighbouring Lucknow.

He also informed that after these film cities to be built at a cost of Rs.650 crore, the best of modern technology would be available in the state for film production and employment for 9,000 people would be generated. The state has made many films tax free in the past. These include "Tevar", "Miss Tanakpur Haazir ho", "Hamari Adhuri Kahani" and "Masaan".

I have a problem with a goody-goody Salman Khan: Shobhaa De

$

0

Shobhaa De is a popular columnist and makes veracious statements while expressing her opinions. While the nation is tagging Bajrangi Bhaijaan to be a complete entertainer, Shobhaa has a different take on it, all together. She has a problem with goody-goody Salman and in her latest column on NDTV, she writes why! Read along…

"Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Will the Real Salman Please Stand Up”

It's me! I have a problem with a goody-goody Salman Khan. I vastly prefer the wildly OTT rascala, ripping off his shirt and spouting risque lines. I buy stereotypes. There. I have confessed. Which is why, after sitting through 159 minutes drowning in malpua syrup, I came home and reached for my Hanuman Chalisa. After reciting it 159 times, I was still not feeling better. I don't suffer from diabetes, or else I would have given myself a hefty shot of insulin just as an additional precaution.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan will go on to make several hundred crores. That's a given. The thing is I have a problem with movies that manipulate... Now several movies are guilty of that - but this one has a specific sub-text (let's not go into the details of what that sub-text is - if you follow the news dealing with high-profile criminal cases, you already know the context). And that sub-text dominates the entire movie, reducing it to an ad commercial for a super efficient detergent ("my shirt washes whiter").

So long as viewers don't dodge the real message of BB - and it's not the obvious Indo-Pak bhai-bhai one - the implausible story becomes more palatable. It certainly appears as if the entire team carefully picked a theme that would project Salman Khan as a larger-than-life do-gooder, incapable of telling an untruth, or hurting a fly (unless that fly comes in the way - as in the fight sequence at the brothel). At this point, I said to myself, maybe a special screening can be held for cops and judges dealing with the ongoing, emotionally-charged hit-and-run case. Why not go the whole hog?

Salman playing a simpleton is a grand idea. But this simpleton is played so broadly, there are times one wonders whether it's a send up. The only superbly timed, wickedly funny line in the movie is when when Salman is asked, "Bhaiya, yeh 'selfie' kya hota hai?" and Salman (Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi in the film - but Salman Khan all the way), quips, "Jab khud ki lete hain na...." long pause. Then "... tasveer." This line sums up Brand Salman. And no matter how sincerely and strenuously Kabir Khan, the director, tries to remould the essential Salman into a namby-pamby, devout Hanuman bhakt who bows and prays to every passing monkey (really!!!!), fans wait for the asli Salman to emerge. I did. I was counting the minutes and saying, "Okay... here comes the turning point... this is when Salman will drop that cloying, simpering, irritating sweetness and be himself." I waited in vain.

Since the star is in every frame virtually, we are stuck. But mercifully he has stiff competition from an angelic six-year-old superstar called Harshaali Malhotra, who wordlessly steals the show from Salman. Then, of course, there is Nawazuddin Siddiqui! Now, why didn't Kabir Khan introduce Chand Nawaab much, much earlier? Like I had tweeted, "More Nawaz, less awaaz", would have added a great deal of histrionic oomph to the narrative.

Now to the key question: was I bored out of my skull? Ummm. No. Only in parts, during the first half. These days audiences are grateful if there is even a semblance of a coherent plot and some sort of a story that holds a blockbuster together. We are used to passively watching a string of mindless scenes, and arrogantly calling that mess a movie. BBdoes have a story - Allah be praised! And it also follows a linear graph, with a conventional beginning, middle and end. Where it flounders, and flounders badly, is when it piles on the cliches. I was pretty astonished by the rather crass caste-ist remarks about 'fair' Brahmins, and meat-eating 'Kshatriyas' who also happen to be 'fair'. Equally, the references to 'Mohammedans' and their food habits were most distasteful.

Whatever the claims about BB being a movie that celebrates love over hate, friendship over enmity, empathy over suspicion (which it indeed does), most Salman Khan bhakts came away worrying about just one question: will his well-timed performance as an ambassador of peace and pyaar keep him out of jail??

After reading this, film's director Kabir Khan tweeted, "Hey @DeShobhaa Pl comment on the film, not on my intentions & integrity. I appreciate a critique of my film not an aspersion on my character."

What do you think? Let us know!

Salman Khan and Kabir Khan have delivered two blockbustering hits back to back and there is already a third film in the pipleline for them. Yes! Salman Khan has confirmed the news himself.

At an event in Mumbai, Salman told the press, “we are planning another film soon. Definitely. It's been proven. People have applauded Bajrangi for its emotional content and everyone has been sending me great messages about the film. Also, this is one film which even critics have loved. Kabir has a vision which helps in making all his films extra special."

Ask him about the film, he said, "If Bajrangi made you cry, we hope to do the same with our third film as well. That also has an emotional story. We have discussed it."

Kabir had previously told reporters that his first experience with Salman was not so nice; hence they teamed up for BB. When Salman was asked the same he added to the joke, "Maybe even Bajrangi ka experience was not that great, that's why we need to do a third film now."

Now isn’t this a great news for the Khan fans?

High Court refuses to suspend hearing of Salman's appeal

$

0

The Bombay High Court on Monday rejected a murder convict's appeal to put on hold the hearing on Bollywood actor Salman Khan's plea against the five-year jail term he has been sentenced to in the 2002 accident case.

The intervention appeal, filed by a murder convict, whose plea has not been heard since 2009, contended that matters concerning celebrities were heard out-of-turn, while other convicts like him were kept pending for long and continued to languish in prisons.

He has also filed a separation petition in the Bombay High Court making similar allegations and prayed that his own appeal must be heard expeditiously.

Justice A.R. Joshi, however, declined to accept the appeal as both the sides in the actor's case have agreed for an expeditious hearing in the matter.

Besides, in the intervenor's petition, the high court has not passed any judicial orders.

Seeking suspension of Salman's appeal, the intervenor's counsel Aparna Vatkar said it should not be heard until the separate petition filed by her client before another bench is decided by the high court.

Salman's lawyer Amit Desai, meanwhile, demanded a CD of the trial court proceedings to enable them argue the appeal in the high court more effectively.

Public prosecutor Sandeep Shinde and Pradeep Gharat said this could not be done as no such CD of the trial court proceedings is available.

The matter will now come up for further hearing on July 27.

Salman, 49, was convicted by the sessions court on May 6 on various charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and sentenced to five years in jail.

He moved the Bombay High Court challenging the conviction and is at present on bail.

One pavement dweller was killed and four others were injured when Salman's Toyota Land Cruiser SUV ran over them as they were sleeping outside a bakery in suburban Bandra early September 28, 2002.

'Everytime I saw Salman uncle cry, I cried' - says Bajrangi Bhaijaan star Harshaali Malhotra

Interviewing six year old Harshaali Malhotra is no easy task. The little girl has shot to fame with her innocent mute girl’s performance in Salman Khan’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and is basking in the limelight that is coming her way. While she was ‘bored’ to give interviews and preferred to play with the journalists, we managed to convince the chirpy girl to answer few questions, of course with some help from her mother Kajal Malhotra, who was sitting besides her. Excerpts from the interview:

How did you get hurt Harshaali?

I fell down.

Were you like this mischievous while shooting for “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”?

No I was not like that.

Were you afraid of Salman Khan?

No.

How was your first meeting with Salman?

I was shy.

Are you energetic in real life as well? Do you take part in sports?

Yes I am energetic.

Do you like studying or playing?

I like playing. But I like doing Maths.

Your mother said you want to become a superstar…so like whom do you want to become a superstar?

I want to be a superstar like Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.

You said to Salman that you want to be a superstar like him so what did he say?

He said ok… (laughs)

Did your parents and you see “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” and what they had to say about the film?

We all liked the film.

Which films of Salman do you like the most?

I liked him in ‘Kick’ and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’.

You play Pakda Pakdi a lot…so did you play with Salman while shooting for ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’?

I used to play games with Salman uncle on phone. I use to sit on Kabir uncle’s lap and play Barbie games. Boys don’t like Barbie games and hence Salman uncle didn’t play that. Kareena aunty was busy with shoot so did not get time to play games with her.

In the film you enjoy cricket so in real life do you like the sport?

No I don’t like cricket. I watch cartoon on TV. I like watching Doremon.

What you like the most in food?

I like chicken. I had lot of chicken while doing that scene in Chicken song. I took four takes to do the scene.

You like dancing or singing?

I like dancing, singing and acting.

In the film you play a mute girl so how was it shooting?

I don’t like dialogues. So it was good.

Did you find difficulty while doing any scene?

No I used to get scared while seeing action scenes.

So when Salman used to do action scenes how did you feel?

I used to cry when he used to do action scenes. They used to take action scene of Salman uncle first and then mine.

Salman uncle rides cycle a lot…did you sit with him on it?

No …Salman uncle used to play table tennis with me in Karjat.

Will you work with Salman again?

Yes.

When Salman use to shoot emotional scenes then….

Even I use to cry when Salman uncle used to cry. I used to feel bad.

What gifts you got while shooting for the film?
I got teddy bear and it is good …I got chocolates as well.

Did Salman treat you with Biryani?

Yes he did give Biryani to all of us. My mother used to feed me food.

You like singing so which is your favourite song?

“Selfie Le Re”, “Aaj Ki Party”, “Bhar Do Jholi”, “Tu Chahiye”, “Chicken Song”.

When you used to run in between shoots did Kabir Khan not call you to do your scenes?

I used to go to vanity van. Kabir uncle never shouted at me.

You are seen playing with a sheep in the film do you like pets…animals?

Dogs, rabbit. Earlier we used to have rabbit. Now we don’t have any pet.

What about that locket did Salman give you that?

When we were watching the film he gave me the locket that time.

Who is the better actor between you and Salman?

He is a good actor. (shies away)

How was it shooting with Kabir uncle?

It was nice …he used to play with me.

The little girl couldn’t answer more and decided to instead click selfies with her favourite journalists. Meanwhile, we continued our conversation with her mother Kajal Malhotra:

So how did the project happen?

Randomly I went to Mukesh Chabra’s office… he called me one day for this project. After few months they said Harshaali has been shortlisted for ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. Till that time I was not aware that Salman was part of this project.

How was she when she first met Salman?

She was alone when she met Salman with staff. I was not with her. I was nervous and was thinking what will she talk…how will she react when she meets Salman. When she came back I asked her how was it meeting Salman she says, ‘she told Salman that she wants to become a superstar like him’. I was shocked. Earlier she was little shy and when she started talking she was non-stop.

What was your reaction when you got to know that Salman is doing the film?

We couldn’t believe initially. It was tough for us to accept it.

In the film she shares a close bond with Salman. What was her equation with him and Kareena?

On the first day of the shoot when she met him she was initially shy. Then they both were left alone for some time and then she got along well with him. Salman loves her a lot. We are happy that she got this big opportunity of working with Salman. It did not happen much with Kareena.

What about her studies did you speak to her teachers in the school?

We took permission from her principal they told us not to take too many holidays.

In real life she is naughty. Was she like that on the sets as well? Did you have a difficult time handling her?

No never she was dedicated towards her work. When we were shooting daily she did not get much free time to see cartoon but she never cribbed about it. She used to play during break time. She used to follow a routine - take bath, have food, shoot and sleep.

Did you have to explain her about the scenes?

No Kabir was there and Harshaali had good tuning with him. Whenever she never understood anything regarding a scene she used to directly ask Kabir about it. I never got into that.

Would you want her to continue acting?

Right now she is dedicated towards acting. I keep taking a gap in between. Sometime back she was unwell so we had stop doing assignments that time she asked me “why we are not shooting am I doing it bad”. She is too small. By the time she is class five we will take a break of six or seven years till she completes 12th. If she wants to pursue acting then we will do it.

On what basis do you select a project for her?

The project has to be good, her role has to be good and the banner has to be big. We wouldn’t want her part to be too small. After doing a role like this, I don’t think we would like her to do a five-ten minute role where she is seen in childhood time. That is not feasible.

Were there any offers in between?

We were getting offers but this project was happening and then her studies were also important.

Will she do television shows and reality shows?

A big no to television shows. We will see what kind of reality shows comes her way…it has to suit her. Like if ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’ offer comes up then a small kid like her can’t take so much pressure as they have to practice a lot. She has no formal training in dancing and singing.

Here’s why Harshaali Malhotra rejected ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo’ and Katrina’s next!

$

0

Child artiste Harshaali Malhotra has become the talk of the town ever since the first teaser of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ released two months back. The little girl has won accolades for her endearing performance in the movie and has surely emerged a star.

However, not many are aware that before Harshaali signed ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, she was approached to play Swara Bhaskar’s childhood role for Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo’ which also stars Salman Khan in the lead.

Reveals Harshaali’s mother, “We had shot for the print bit of the role for PRDP. She was supposed to play Swara’s childhood version. But then later we got a call from the makers of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. When things got finalized there, we spoke to Salman about how unfair it would be to have a minuscule appearance in PRDP. He too agreed and that is when we told Sooraj Barjatya. He was humble and understood our point and that is how we backed out.”

Interestingly, not just PRDP, but Harshaali was also offered the childhood role of Katrina Kaif in one of her films. But she rejected that as well on the same grounds.

“When the first teaser of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ was released, Harshaali was approached to play Katrina’s childhood role in a film. I didn’t even know which film was this. But again, I rejected it because I don’t want Harshaali to do a 5-6 minutes cameo appearance. And also, it would have been too much of a stress for Harshaali. She needed a break and hence I rejected it,” confirms Kajal, Harshaali’s mother.

Incidentally, there have been reports that Salman Khan asked Harshaali to reject the Katrina Kaif starrer. Probe her mother about it and she clarifies, “No, Salman Khan hasn’t asked us to do anything. Though it was there in our contract that she shouldn’t do something during the shoot and release because she had a main role. They required bulk dates from us because she had to shoot with Salman and his availability."

Well, we hope the gossip mongers can rest now since the truth is out!

What say?

He was apparently advised not to enter the building from the front entrance. Salman therefore went through much trouble and also scaled a wall, to enter the building from the back entrance.

Salman Khan fans have been trending the Twitter world with "#SalmanMEGASTAROfCentury" while SRK fans have taken to the hashtag "#SRKBiggestStarOfAllTime".

Well, the race continues, and the competition between the Khans and their fans is getting more interesting and exciting by the minute. As for Raees and Sultan, who do you think will take the cake on Eid 2016? Thoughts and predictions?
